I recently graduated from UT Austin with a degree in biochemistry with hopes of going to dental school. My first attempt didn't work out but I have recently been admitted to a post-bac program that has a proven track record (80% success rate) of getting students like myself into dental and medical schools. So it would take 2 yrs of that plus 4 yrs of dental school. However I currently have a great job doing finance, and also got accepted to an evening MBA program in Dallas (I applied to both schools at the same time). I'm completely torn between the two options but have to make a decision soon. Obviously a career in dentistry would be a much better decision financially, but a much harder road to complete. I just think moving away from friends and family for 6 years while accumulating debt would be tough, but the pay-off would be huge (my dentist wants me to take over his practice). Anyone out there that was in a similar position as mine, or anyone have any advice to offer? Thanks!
Dental School or MBA??

Reply:MBA means you will spend yuour life working for other people.
Dental School means you will work for yourself.
I would choose dental school.

Reply:General advice is almost never pay for an MBA unless it's for one of the top 5 schools. There'll never be a decline in need for dentists, but an MBA is mostly learning to market yourself and networking.
Reply:Hi. A member of my family had to make the same choice. Money definately does matter when choosing a career (dont let anyone tell you that it does not), but the most important thing is that you enjoy what you are doing. If you really like this finance job, stick with it! You will probably get very good at it. I know many dentists who absolutely hate their job and are depressed.
Reply:My cousin was in a similar boat a few years ago. He chose to study dentistry. He is still in school and he is loving it. No regrets. But different folks, different strokes. So, I suggest you do what you are passionate about. Do the rocking chair test. When you are old, which decision do you think would've made you happier? Good luck!
