How can I find a Dental School to get a Procedure done?

Im looking how to get a procedure done at a Dental School in PA. How do I go about this? This is because my finance was in a car accident and lost some teeth she wants something permenant but her insurance wont cover it. Can any one help?

How can I find a Dental School to get a Procedure done?
There are 3 dental schools in Pennsylvania: two are in Philadelphia (UPenn %26amp; Temple) and one is in Pittsburgh (UPittsburgh) -- see links below.

The type of bridge she needs is determined by how many teeth need to be replaced, and the condition of the teeth on either side of the empty spaces. Implants are also a really good option for missing teeth, particularly in the front, as they keep the jaw from losing bone as you age, and don't require any work on the surrounding teeth to support them as a bridge does.

Typically, you can expect to pay about 1/2 the going price for dental procedures done at a school. Another great option is to check out the research studies and clinical trials conducted at the schools. Patients can get cutting-edge procedures done by post-graduate students in specialty programs like oral surgery or periodontics, often at very little or no cost, in return for agreeing to return for observation over a period of months or years. You and your fiancee might investigate whether there are any implant studies being done at one of the dental schools, or bridge studies where they are trying out a new adhesive or ceramic material.

The dental schools will do a good job, although it will probably take longer than if she had the work done in a private practice.

Good luck!
Reply:There are three schools in PA. One in Pittsburgh and two in Philadelphia. They should have phone numbers for patient services.
Reply:my sister-in-law had hers done in pittsburgh. they were nice and did a great job .they care .good luck

I live in Miami a want to go to a dental school for a filling.?

I live in Miami and need to get a filling done. I'm originally from NY and would go to the dental school clinics for minor procedures for a fraction of the cost. Usually the dental school charged less than $50.00 for a filling, whiting etc. also everything is closely monitored by a real dentist. please let me know if there's anywhere I can go out here for services done by the student.

I need a grant for my dental school training .I'm a single mother.?

Dental office traning , need grant of $6,500.00 to go to dental school

I need a grant for my dental school training .I'm a single mother.?
You need to talk to your finacial aid adviser at your school of choice. There are federal loans and something called a PAL grant. I am also a single mother and am currently on a loan of $12,000 a year plus I get $500 back every three months. This is combination loan and the PAL grant. So I will have a huge debt, your right about a grant being the way to go. Talk to your school, they should be happy to help.

Taking Adderall that isn't yours during dental school?

I am looking to take Adderall during dental school, but can't get a prescription myself. I don't have ADHD. Anyone know if they generally have drug tests during professional school unannounced? If so, how bad is it if the school finds out you are taking drugs that haven't been prescribed to you? I need to do well. I need to focus. I feel I need Adderall to overcome my competition, but I don't want to get kicked out.

Taking Adderall that isn't yours during dental school?
adderals an amphetamine so its out of your system in 3 days to a week, also i doubt their gonna drug test you unannounced so i say go for it....but be careful because possession of prescription drugs that arent yours is illegal as hell
Reply:adderall generally gets out of your system pretty quick... I havent heard of drug tests at schools ever. Adderall is a highly addictive drug though. I used to do it to get through high school on a daily basis and the more you do it the more youre going to need it to be successful in daily life. I would suggest not being dependent on a drug to focus....this is coming from a person addicted to drugs not someone who doesnt know what theyre talking about.. adderall is great stuff when it comes to getting through school and also for social reasons for people that are antisocial but seriously I've went to many sleepless nights on it and its really not worth it but if you are gonna do it...I dont think drug tests will be a problem.

Can I get into Dental School without a science major?

Hi! I just became a junior at my university, and although I had considered a career in the medical field, I realized that working with really sick people was very depressing for me. I couldn't handle it. Because of this, I decided not to major in a a science field because I did not want to be a doctor anymore. Recently, a friend of mine asked me if I had ever considered becoming a dentist. She said that this field would involve my interest in medicine without having to work with really sick people, something that, as I mentioned earlier, made me very sad. I looked up info on a career in dentistry, and I am fascinated by it! Unfortunately, I am currently pursuing a non-science major (English to be exact), and I have a very good G.P.A. C

Is there a way to work my major and give dental school a shot?

Thank you,

Jose W.

Can I get into Dental School without a science major?
You don't have to have a science major but you will have to take all of the premed classes and, as far as I know, you will also have to take the MCAT. Dental students spend the vast majority of their first two years in dental school school with medical students - they have to do the same work with cadavers and all of that that medical students have to do (my friend who just completed her first year of dental school has great stories about this). If you're comfortable with that, then go for it!
Reply:Are you really comfortable with the idea of spending half your day working in stranger's mouths and smelling everything they've recently eaten, drunk and smoked. I couldn't do it
Reply:yes but you still need to fulfill the premed requirements

they vary by school but are generally include 2 semesters of all sciences (chem, bio, physics) and biochem, orgo 1 orgo 2 and the labs for each

youll also need up to calculus 3 , and possibly diff eq and lin alg

and 2 humanities

2 social sciences

dental school is esentially medical school you can go in with any major you just need the pre dental requirements and generally a 3.0 or above

Undergraduate Degree for Med/Dental school?

I will be graduating with a BBSc that is is a Bachelor of Business and Science, with International Business and Physiology. Do any of you know how a medical/dental school would view this degree?

Thanks!

Undergraduate Degree for Med/Dental school?
You can major in anything, as long as you also take the premed prerequisite classes....and if anything, a non-biology major helps you stand out in the crowd (these days med schools accept more humanities majors than biology majors).

As long as you have a solid GPA (total and science-only), good MCAT score, solid LORs and volunteer experience/extracurriculars you'll be fine.
Reply:as long as you fulfill the basic requirements for med school have an overall GPA of 3.5 a science GPA of 3.5 10 or above on MCAT good letters and interview you should be very competitive....you certainly have an advantage with your educational background that is quite different from typical applicant.
Reply:As long as you did the pre med requirements exactly the same as any other degree.

Thanks

Will where I go for undergrad affect getting into dental school?

I've just been accepted into the University of Michigan, Saginaw Valley State University, and Grand Valley State University. I really love GVSU and SVSU, but I'm not really liking U of M. However, I've heard that if you go to the undergraduate school that you want to attend as a dental school, chances for acceptance are increased. Does anyone know if where you go for undergrad affects your chances of getting into dental school? Also, if I do not decide to go to the U of M, which other school should I go to?

Will where I go for undergrad affect getting into dental school?
Agree. Grades and DAT most important. The school does need to offer 4-year bachelor degrees. I personally went to community college for 1 or the 4 years to save money...a collegue of mine went to com college 2/4 years and got into dental school at the same time as me (in the first round of acceptances). My school at the time (OHSU) had a breakdown of what they looked for from applicants (scale of 100 points): Grades 50; DAT 25; Interview 15; Extracurricular and other stuff, including things like observation in dental offices 10. %26lt;-- I suppose it could have included "school gone to", but that issue never came up. Call the dental school's admission office that you are most interested in and they should be glad to help you. Best wishes.
Reply:Usually has more to do with GPA and test scores. However, just be sure all classes transfer to the dental school you plan to attend.

Do you have to be accepted into dental school for dental hygiene?

I am currently a sophmore at a university and still taking my required courses. I was just wondering if you have to be accepted to dental school to be a dental hygienist. Also, what classes do I need to take? (so I have an idea for next semester). thanks for the help.

Do you have to be accepted into dental school for dental hygiene?
well yes of course. I am a dentist and dental assistant!
Reply:You have to be accepted into an accredited dental hygiene program. Only some dental schools offer a dental hygiene program. You may want to call and inquire about the hygiene program of the school you're interested in attending and have them provide you with a list of prerequisites courses (school requirement may be different) Generally, you are required to taken anatomy, microbiology, pharm.,and chemistry.

Life changes... My husband wants to go to dental school!?

My husband and I are 28 and 27. We both have great jobs and he is doing great as a bank manager. HOWEVER - he says he feels unfulfilled in his job and wishes he had more of a "real career". He thinks he wants to go to dental school. We are both worried about the enormous strain this will put on our finances. He will have to quit his job for school and we will have to take out lots of student loans, etc. Not only that, but he is also going to have to take about 1 year's worth of undergrad science before he can take the DAT and apply! Then we are looking at about 4 more years of dental school. We have enough money to live comfortably as we are now, so it is more about being fulfilled in his job. I want him to be happy. My questions - hopefully to someone who has experienced this are - How hard is it? How's the payoff and is it worth it? Are you happy now? How did it affect your marriage? Is he too old to make this change? He will be mid 30s when he starts practicing! Help

Life changes... My husband wants to go to dental school!?
You sound like a great wife, he should be glad to have someone who supports him so much. I'm kind of in the same situation. I kept my day job and work full time while I attend night classes to earn my degree and then I can move on. It's really really hard having a full time job and being a full time student...but I'm glad to see that you and your husband know that the work and the payoff is better than him being in a miserable job. I really doubt your husband is too old to start learning new things. However, as far as marriage, keep in mind that if he takes night classes or even if he quits his job and gets a new one while he goes to school...he won't be around as much and he'll have more responsibilities. Me and my wife sometimes don't see each other for awhile and argue sometimes, but it's not that bad. Good luck!
Reply:You have to be able to see the big picture. Yes, it will be hard and there will be sacrifices involved but in the end he will be doing something that he enjoys and it will pay well. Report It

Reply:if he has his mind made up and this is what he feels he wants to do his life is not over yet and he has plenty of time to go to school and pursue this career but he has to have alot of interest in it he cant just do it for one reason and i think that you would incourage him more if you supported him.
Reply:Sorry, no direct experience. It's a good thing that your husband wants to do something more with his life than hold a mediocre career and not really be happy. Ever notice how the most interesting stories in this life are the ones about the challenges people take on and achieve?

This may or may not be for the two of you, but there's always the possibility of having the Army pay his way through all that schooling, which they will. Of course this will incur some considerable service time, but you'll get a chance to travel, you'll still live quite well (which he'll have a good income as an officer), and best of all you'll come out debt free once he's done with his service time. I've met a lot of fellow officers in the medical field that are really happy because they not only get to support the troops directly, but they are sent on a lot of humanitarian missions that help the less fortunate in this world.

Either way, I just recommend that you make the best of whatever choices you make...it's your life after all, and when you look back, what kind of story do you want to end up with? You need to really decide that you're going to follow through either way though. If you attempt to make a drastic change, you have to see it through. Best advice either way is to just research all your options, typical debt, typical pay, etc to get a really good idea of what you'll get. It's the choice of both of you in the end and what challenges you're willing to go through to accomplish the goals you set.
Reply:He could take courses now and not have to quit (those science courses). My wife is taking Master's courses right now, but has a good job and could continue where she is at. I support her decision to go back b/c education is priceless and she feels the same as your husband, that she needs more than the job she has now. Kids who have parents that are highly educated have more impetus to complete a high level of education themselves.

I'm 32 and still paying off my student loans. I have a co-worker who is 48 and just finished his, and we're auditors at a Big 4 accounting firm. I can't believe anyone would want to snuff the desire of their family/friends/spouse to better themselves or get more education!
Reply:i'd be able to answer this question in a few years but until then, i will say this:

1. way to be supportive and realistic.

2. it's a risk to take, but he sounds very driven and more power to him.

3. go for it

4. make sure you have enough to live comfortably.

in the end, you both wanna be happy.

best of luck!

Which is the easyest dental school to get into?
You make me want to brush my teeth for an extra minute every day and floss very carefully.
Reply:new jersey dental school, more of a college really, but there enrollment pre-requisits a lowere than most other colleges.
Reply:Most dental schools have similar entry requirements these days due to the popularity of the course. Some have a pre-dental year (Dundee for example) which can help if you are short of the grades.

All schools will expect a significant amount of work experience as all applicants will have similar grades. And prepare for interview.

There is also the (relatively) new course of dental therapy which, at the end, enables you to do fillings, extractions and other treatments all under the prescription of a dentist. The dentist does the treatment planning and the more difficult treatments.

Good luck and enjoy - -I did my BDS at Glasgow and finished 8 years ago, great job and doing my Masters Degree now!!!

How will I provide for myself while trying to get my DDS Dental School?

I am worried of how I will be able to provide for myself properly while attempting to finish Dental School and earn my DDS. No I am not in Dental School just yet,but driving toward it. I know it's foolish to think of such perhaps. But it's picking at my mind. I'm in my mid 20's living with my family still. I have a girlfriend,we plan to move in together in a few years. These are my plans. Eight whole years however. That is going to be hard without enough income coming in. Will Dental School assist me with doing part time work somewhere so I will be able to provide for myself if I get my own place? What recommendations do you guys give? Or insight from Dental Students, even those who were Dental Students and fended for themselves, would be much appreciated!

How will I provide for myself while trying to get my DDS Dental School?
that wood be nice but like anybody else have you tried the employment office. You'll have to live like everyone else till you graduate. Then you can disappear into the woodwork and throw around the big bucks and snap your fingers

My husband are are currently in that situation ourselves. We married when I was 23 and he was 25. Over the next few years we had rather random approaches toward what we wanted to do, train for, etc. Finally we got ourselves in gear, and he decided as I wanted to become an RN, I would go first and he would put me though by him working first.

I spent the next few years going to nursing school for my RN (and having unexpected preemie babies), but I kept plugging away and did finally graduate and obtain my license in 1998.

So, now hubby is in school studying to be come a teacher for K-12 education and I AM working putting HIM through school. He is a mature returning student of 42 and is doing extremely well, but there ARE stresses such as raising 2 Autistic Children at the same time as me working and he studying. However, he is managing our sons, their needs with amazing grace and aplomb.

We are living off of one income for over 15 year mostly, and is at times a challenge, BUT rarely true hardship. We would do it again, as our children needs us and the family needs us. Loss of those perks that would make life sweeter are not all that necessary.

Look at what you want, look at what it will take to get it it and then decide what is worth losing and what is worth having?
Reply:If it makes him happy then the money issue shouldn't be a problem. You should be happy for him. You only live once.

Can I get into Dental School?

I have a 2.00 gpa and am in my 2nd semester of my sophmore year of college. This semster I know I will recieve straight A's until I graduate because I have definately started studying harder. With this, is there any chance I can still get into dental school? If yes, what can I do to improve my chances?

Can I get into Dental School?
Yes, you have a very slim shot, but theoretically possible. My friend made it to NYU dental school with just under a 3.0, so I know 3.0 is possible (not normally, but he did some other things to help make up for it). Now, understand that while NYU is normally an awesome school, their dental schools is apparently ranked REALLY low for some reason. If you get a 4.0 the rest of your way through the end of junior year, you can get a 3.0 and have a shot.

So, you need to make up for that poor GPA. In addition to the straight A's, you'll need to score a REALLY high score on the DAT, and do a whole bunch of nice extra curriculars. Then, start applying to a TON of dental schools.

Now, theoretically, this is possible to do. Just realize, it's going to be HARD, especially since your body and mind have been so used to doing squat for so long.

I want to go to dental school, but I have too many B+s!!! Help!!!?

I am a sophmore student in UF aspiring to attend Dental school.

I am taking all pre-medical(dental) courses, but I have too many B+s..

For example, I have an A for Organic chemistry 1, but B+ for Orgo 2. Chem 1 A, Chem 2 B+, and so on..

My science GPA is currently 3.65, and it would either increase to 3.75 or decrease to 3.55. Do you think I should do really well on DAT to get in?

I want to go to dental school, but I have too many B+s!!! Help!!!?
WOw, those are some good grades. GPA is just one factor in you getting into dental school. Take the DAT and try to ace that and you should be okay. Have you ever considered pharmacy school?

You may want to consider becoming a pharmacist! Why?

PROS

1) Takes as little as 5 years to complete a pharmacy degree after high school

2) Flexible working hours, you can work 9-5 or do a 7 on and 7 off system

3) Starting pay can be anywhere from 75-150k depending on location and need

4) You can literally get a job anywhere in the US because of the short supply and great demand of pharmacists

5) You will have time to start a family

How do you get approved for dental work, performed by dental students, at Baylor Dental School Waco or Dallas?

I understand the dental students with 1 year of school remaining can perform dental work to gain experience and the cost is minimal.to the patient. Does anyone know how one becomes a patient of a dental school student? Are there guidlines or stipulations one must follow, can someone please help me with this????

How do you get approved for dental work, performed by dental students, at Baylor Dental School Waco or Dallas?
why not just call the school and ask them how? I'm sure they have the information you need..

Does being certified as a dental hygienist hurt or help one's chances of getting into dental school?

I have virtually unusable degree, and lately I've been considering becoming a dentist. I don't have the classes required to get into dental school, so I'm taking a few basics. I am trying to decide whether or not to go for another whole B.S. or to get the basics out of the way and try to get into a dental hygiene program so I can work in the field a little. I have seen statistics showing that a degree in nursing actually hurts one's chances of getting into medical school, and I was wondering if things work the same way for dental school.

Does being certified as a dental hygienist hurt or help one's chances of getting into dental school?
I would look again at the nurse to doctor thing because most primary care based schools (versus Research) preffer someone with lots of patient care time and nurses fit that bill.

As for dental school, I haven't looked a lot into it but time in the field as tech would definitely be good. This way you do better at the interview because you've been in the field and you can tell if you really like it. Schools like to see that you were thinking about it for a while did the tech thing and fell even more in love with it after. Oh, and you can rub noses with some dentists that would be able to write you some good and personal recommendation letters.

Good luck!
Reply:I don't know if it's a disadvantage or an advantage, but I _can_ say that - as an employer - I'd consider it a disadvantage to know that someone was using my practice as a stepping-stone to get out of the dental hygiene profession. I would prefer to hire for the long haul. There might be someone who is near retirement andonly wants a hygienist for the duration of his professional life, though.
Reply:I can't see where it would hurt you other than using up valuable time (and college credits that wouldn't be transferable) that you could be spending towards obtaining a doctor's degree. Most of the dentist I know never worked in a dental office prior to the prusuit of their degree. Usually they worked in a dental lab during their college years to help further their training with the hands on experience. That would be more informative for a person wanting to become a dentist. If you're not 100% sure if dentistry is for you, maybe you should talk with your dentist. Stress your thoughts and concerns, perhaps you could ask to observe him/her a day or two thru various procedures. Sometimes people aren't really aware of the work we do on a day to day basis. You may find yourself running not walking towards any other degree. It's not something all people can or want to do. You have to really enjoy not only helping people, but working in all types of different mouths with different problems. I can assure you that not all are pretty, and some we are thankful for the mask and gloves. It's really something you have to love to succeed at doing. Hope I've been of some help. Good luck with whatever decision you make.
Reply:I don't think being a dental hygienist first will hurt your chances of getting into dental school. BUT, you have to consider the time and money put into both of these programs. Thought about this myself, and still might do dental school. Even if you are a dental hygienist first you must still complete the full 4 years of dental school. Not just another couple of years. Even if you have had combined dental/%26amp; hygiene seminar classes these would usually also need to be taken again but, as a dental student. Dental school usually needs a few prerequitsites than hygiene programs. You also need to take the DAT. (like the MCAT but, for dental school). Also don't wait until all of your prereq's are done before applying to dental school. If they will be completed before you are due to enter. As for being a hygienist first you will prob. be a little more familiar with some of the clinic work and used to being with patients. You will still need to learn clinical dentistry. Also more didactic classes (bookwork) that only dental students take, and more exposure to legal aspects and how to run your own business. For myself I already had a bachelor degree before hygiene school. Not needed, though many of us had one. Finished with another. My best friend in hygiene school was a dental student in the same year graduating class. (went to a dental school w/ a dental hygiene program, not a comm. college) Didn't know at first but, she had been a hygienist for 20 years before going back to dental school. What really helps is that you might be able to temp. on weekends to help pay the bills. (if you have time not doing lab work or studying) Still need a large loan for dental school. Would suggest talking to an admissions person from each program. (faculty) They would be able to answer your questions and point you in the right direction. Try going to a dental school and dental hygiene open house to see the school and check out the two programs. There will be current students and faculty avail. to speak with. Good Luck! any questions let me know. (agree with the above answer, you can ask to 'shadow' a dentist or hygienist to see if it's right for you.)
Reply:I guess I'm not completly sure but dental hygienists make really good money. I am a dental assistant and we dont make crap but an hygienist makes good money. I dont see how it would hurt you. Assistants are always going to school to be hygienists, all the knowledge you already have for teeth can only help you I dont see how it could hurt you.

Age limit for dental school???

Is there an age limit for dental school? I am in college and I plan to go through my undergraduates degree for 4 years, then in the marine corps as an officer for 4 years. i will be about 25 when i get out. can i go then?

Age limit for dental school???
Your age then should not be a problem. Also, I agree with the previous post. Get right into it while you are in the service.
Reply:why don't you take denteristy in service as your MOS?
Reply:you can try, but not be as hopeful.

as i know, dentistry is extremely competitive. you may not have the qualification equivalent as when your competitors are having.

but you may want to start practicing bending wires to improve your manual dexterity as it is part of the interview criterion

How safe it is to go for dental treatment with dental student in dental school?

How safe it is to go for dental treatment with dental student in dental school?I don't have dental insurance and I am going to start dental treatment from next thursday. Is there any risk involved?I am older and close to 50 with High Blood pressure(Taking Diovan HCT everyday to control it)

How safe it is to go for dental treatment with dental student in dental school?
Probably safer than with anyone else, these new dentist are performing dentistry with a highly skilled and seasoned dental instructor watching over their shoulder, critiquing their every move throughout each procedure. The work may be somewhat slower, but then again, don't you agree that doing something slower lessens the chance of error? You are in good hands with these young dentist’s, they know the work and how to perform it, but they need the practice to aquire the speed before going out and hanging their shingle.
Reply:The only disadvantage of being seen by dental students is that everything takes a long time due to all work having to be checked. The standard of care is usually higher than would be found in the average dental practice. Everyone is polite and the atmosphere is laid back and relaxed, the facilities available are usually excellent.
Reply:Many years ago I used such a place in NYC and it worked out fine. There was licensed dentist there with the intern/student all the time. Mine was for an impacted wisdom tooth, they did a good job.
Reply:You can get treatment from dental students. They are always monitored by their staffs.
Reply:It is very safe. There are always licensed dentists on staff. Supervising the students and checking their work. They will ask you to fill out a complete health history as well and probably even check your blood pressure at the clinic. We always took every patient's blood pressure before each appointment. I think you will be fine and donating your time to a student is a wonderful thing to do!

What is the best path in transferring to a dental school?

I currently attend a junior college (Orange Coast College) and I was wondering when I should transfer to a dental school or if I should transfer into a university then transfer to a dental school? Like, does it matter what college I transfer from to a dental school???

What is the best path in transferring to a dental school?
As long as you complete the pre-requisites for the dental school. I'm not quite sure, but doesn't dental school require at least bachelors degree? If it does, then you'll have to transfer first to a 4 year university and then take all the tests and classes to satisfy the requirements for dental school.

How can I get into the Dental school in Houston, TX?

I graduated from high school in Nicaragua (2004) and now I'm taking a Dental Assistant course in Houston in a regular college, but I really want to be a dentist. In this college I just translated my diploma to English, but I don't know if I can do that in a Dental school or University.

What can I do???

How can I get into the Dental school in Houston, TX?
You need to make sure that you have fulfilled all your requirements to enter the dental school of your choice. It doesn't matter if you graduated from Nicaragua, you need to have all your requirements ready along with your DAT exam and any recommendation letters that they need. Go visit the school and they would give you all the info you need. Good Luck

Reply:Yes there is one...in the greater Ontario area, but there is a very long waiting list for denture patients.

Graduated college five years ago, thinking of going to dental school, advice?

I have a BS in Anthropology, with minors in Biology and Sociology. I read a true crime book recently about a crazy stalker dude who killed his girlfriend in 2001. That's neither here nor there, but the girl had a 2.5 or so GPA and was in dental school. I was surprised, because I figured you'd have to have better grades than that. I have a 2.8 GPA (too much partying in my younger days), and wondered if I could go to dental school. Is there a standardized test like the MCAT? Because I'm an awesome test taker, and that would work in my favor. Please let me know anything you can, if you are in dental school, or a dentist, or a close friend or family member is. Thanks.

Graduated college five years ago, thinking of going to dental school, advice?
yeah there is the DSAT or DCAT i think...and it's hard to get in but not as hard as med school. my best friend is a dentist. i was thinking about doing the same thing but changed my mind.

What do I need to do to get into dental school?

I'm a freshman undergrad right now, but I want to be a dentist and perhaps specialize in something...what sorts of things should I be doing right now to get into dental school? I'm taking pre-med/pre-dent classes right now, but I know that the pre-med students usually do research during their breaks to have a better chance of getting into med-school. Is there anything I need to do? Are there any student jobs I can hold until I get to dental school? Which dental schools are the best to go to or does it not matter? Do any of them offer scholarships? What are ideal DAT scores to achieve and when can I take the DATs? And I hope to someday open my own private office?

Any other advice or personal experiences would be appreciated.

What do I need to do to get into dental school?
My advice is make sure you don't do a specific pre med course - they generally attract the best and brightest who you must compete against. Enroll in an arts or science program that allows you to take the required subjects to get admitted to dental school eg basic math, physics, chem, biology and English. Aside form that concentrate on getting the best GPA you can.

I have 2 (a son %26amp; a daughter) in dental school right now. The competion is strong. They both put themselves out of the box %26amp; volunteered in their community (Big Brother, animal shelters, working with the homeless). They both do no parties on weekends. They both hold jobs %26amp; got to know people in positions that could write recommends for them. They also volunteered at dental clinics. You are on the rright track with your classes just carry a good amount of math %26amp; biology. My 2 children also have a strong background in travel including living 3 yrs in Saudi Arabia %26amp; they also have strong foreign language backgrounds (German, Spanish, French, Italian, %26amp; Japanese). The actual dental college will look at things you did without getting paid for then jobs you held. My children took the DAT's twice each of them %26amp; they took the first one approx. 9 mos. before school was scheduled to start. Good luck %26amp; I hope I helped some. There are really alot of good dental schools out there it's just alot of competition also.

Jimma university in ethiopia-dental school -reg?
Namaste Jhi,

I'm an Ethiopian that happened to have studied in India.

To answer your questions:

- Jimma is the capital of the coffee homeland province of Keffa.

- Jimma University is one of the biggest universities in Ethiopia.

- You have nothing to be afraid of with regards to safety in Ethiopia. There are literally hundreds of university lectures from India in Ethiopia. To confirm that, either email your embassy here in Addis Ababa or search for lecturers here in Addis Ababa University and/or Unity University College. (They are the highest importers of Indian lecturers in Ethiopia.)

- You don't have to worry about vegetarianism because vegetables are abundant thorugh out the country. There are also Indian restaurants in the capital. (Am not sure about Jimma.)

- If free housing is provided then you have nothing to worry about, since the highest expense we pay here in Ethiopia is rent.

- I have a friend who happens to be lecturer in Jimma and he's here in Addis almost half of the time. I mean that if you find the social and or clubbing life a bit dull in Jimma you can always hop on a public transport to the capital for some fun.

- The image of us being poor is what we are trying to change. We have the fastest growing economy in sub-sharan Africa.

So, please do not be worried about coming here. There are a lot of your compatriots here working in various organisations. And besides, Ethiopians are one of the most hospitable people in the world. We respect our guests. Email me if you need any specific details.

Wishing you good luck in your endeavours,

Cheers !
Reply:To add on what Ethio ... said

-don't worry about safety

-meat is hardly eaten here(it's considered a rich person's diet) but it's liked by a lot of Ethiopians

-about social life, foreigners are respected here(though they get stared at sometimes)...but I think since u r an Indian(ur color matches that of Ethiopians') u'll do fine and u won't get stared at ........and u won't have trouble makin' friends since Ethiopians are very welcomin' people

-and one more thing, Ethiopia isn't that poor!

hope I helped

How much does it cost a dental implant at a dental school?

I know a regular dental implant costs about 3200$ (total cost with crown) but I heard dental schools have cheaper prices.Anyone knows how much is it and are the students reliable?Do they perform under the supervision of an experienced dentist? Is there a dental school in Tampa?

How much does it cost a dental implant at a dental school?
You can generally assume when going to a dental school that the price will be about half of a normal dentist. We have two schools in our area, Detroit, at U of Michigan you have to see a student if you want the cheap price but they dont stick you with the rookie students, and they have actual dentists who come and check what they are doing step by step to make sure everything looks good. At the other school over here, U of Detroit Mercy you can see a student or an instructor as you wish both at half price so it depends on where you go.

I went to U of M for a root canal and though the appointment takes longer, since they have to have the teacher check it out every so often, but it was worth it to save 300 bucks.

I found this on a search...

There are 2 dental schools in the state of Florida - Nova Southeastern is in Ft Lauderdale and University of Florida at Gainesville is in Gainesville. Both should be accepting patients for their clinics.

How much does my first degree influence dental school applications?

My first time in college I earned a math degree with a 3.2 overall gpa. It has now been a few years after graduation, and I am considering going back to school to do pre-dental courses. How much weight will dental admissions boards put on my first degree when I apply? Could I lessen its influence if I take my pre-dental courses at a school other than my alma mater?

How much does my first degree influence dental school applications?
If you've taken the prerequisite undergraduate classes, any major is fine. If you're missing some prereqs, you might have to take them before you apply, check with the school you are applying to. Math sounds like an excellent major and you have a decent GPA-you can emphasize on your application how math taught you logical reasoning skills and problem-solving skills. Dentists often have to make judgement calls based on x-ray or visual evidence and they have to be good at understanding shapes and materials.

Question about Medical and Dental school???

Okay, I am a bit embarrassed, I am on the brink (have a D by 1 point, right before the final) of receiving an F in Organic Chemistry and I have honestly tried so hard to understand this class. I am at a really tough school and it is a known fact that our teacher tries to trick us on the test! I am not talking bad about him because I completely understand the importance of the subject. About a month ago, I came down with the worst virus that I've ever encountered. I am now feeling well, but at the time it enormously hindered my studying abilities. Also, I am taking Physics along with a Cell Biology class and have labs with every one. I know that I am in a hole and I will never give up on my goal to become a doctor one day, it's my dream. So, my question is with a F in Organic, is it impossible to get into Med or Dental school? Or, should I cut my losses? Thanks so much for any information!

Question about Medical and Dental school???
Drop the class if you still can. If you can't, then you'll have to take it again. Make it your goal to get an A in it the second time around. Your school may have a GPA adjustment policy for classes that you retake, so find out about that. You'll have to juggle more difficult classes than physics and cell bio if you get into medical school, so you should try to work on your study habits now. Medical and dental schools vary widely in their admissions requirements, and if you're otherwise motivated or have a good academic career then you have a chance. Be sure to look at osteopathic as well as allopathic schools. Osteopathic schools generally look at the "big picture" when assessing an applicant, as opposed to allopathic schools which mostly look at the numbers GPA+MCAT (although this is just a generalization). If you're not a suitable candidate, you can always look for alternate studies. You can go into nursing or allied health fields like physical therapy or dietetics, become an EMT, do biomedical research at a university or in industry, or go to graduate school. You can always apply to medical school after you get a masters degree if your undergraduate experience didn't go as well as you had planned. I know a DVM that did just that. I like to think that where there's a will, there's a way!
Reply:Wow those are some tough classes to take in one quarter. Anyway, an F in organic chem is a big "no no". If you think you are gonna fail it, then either drop it or go through with it this time and retake it next quarter. Dental/medical school will not accept a F in organic chem.
Reply:No, it won't be impossible, but you will have to do several things to compensate for that. And, you will be looking at an up-hill battle to compete with students who've gotten A's in all these and other classes.

First, you'll certainly need to re-take that class, and perhaps others that you've not done well in. You'll also need to do very well in later classes, so that it is apparent that you are capable of learning and understanding large amounts of material. Eventually in your applications, you may be well served to explain what happened this semester.

Those things, coupled with a good MCAT score might make your applications acceptable.
Reply:Sounds like you will have to re-take the class. I would also talk to your advisor and find out if you are SOL because you failed it once...or if you still have a chance if you retake it and bring the grade up. You may have to suck it up and take ONLY that class to make sure you understand the material. Also try to get a different teacher if at all possible.

Keep in mind if you want to be a doctor but, can't make medical school you can go the Doctor of Osteopathy route...I think they may be a tad more leinent...I have a cousin who was turned down for medical school but, got into soteopathy school.

Also, you could also become a physicians assistant which is also a good route and you are still helping people.
Reply:At all cost, avoid the D or F in any class. Drop or withdraw from the class if you know for certain that will be your grade. Retake the course and do well in it. Just remember the important thing. Why are you going into med school in the first place? What is your passion in life? Know that, and that will motivate you to do well in class.

Even if you did poorly in some areas, don't discount med school all together. There are other options. You may try US osteopathic schools or med schools in the Caribbean like St. George or Ross.

Won't get accepted to DENTAL SCHOOL?

What does it mean when a dental school states, “The admissions committee does not consider highly those applicants who have been enrolled for more than one-third of coursework (both general and required courses) in community colleges or junior colleges.”

I have about 135 credit hours from a community college, so if the dental school has that statement on their website, will it be waste of my money to apply? I am taking upper-level science classes to show that i can handle hard science classes. I really want to do dentistry, but since I went to community college, I won't be able to achieve my goals? Community college was not easy at all. I studied all night and all weekends to get an A in org. chem. class that was 6 hr long, but at the end, it was not worth it!!. This will get me depressed to death. Please, help.

Won't get accepted to DENTAL SCHOOL?
Ah, Dental school is very hard to get in to. It's the hardest medical field to get into, actually (assuming you want to be a dentist). It's probably close to the hardest field period to get into.

If you're just interested in dental hygene the path is not nearly as difficult, but I'm assuming that's not where you're going.

Universities with dental programs usually give priority to students from that university. Students applying for elsewhere have a much smaller chance of getting in, and community college courses make it even worse.

They also look highly upon having your bachelor of science completed.

Chances are you don't stand a chance in the world getting in, if I'm being honest. You're going to be going against people applying from that university, who probably average nearly an A (4.0) GPA, and the chances of getting in are usually no higher than 10% of applicants accepted.

Not to mention you'd have to go out of your way and through a lot of trouble to get a really good DAT score if you want to even stand a chance at getting in.
Reply:That means your community college course won't mean squat, at the dental school, and will have to start all over - despite the fact you already know what you're doing

Getting into dental school ?!?

What is the minimum GPA a college student must have to be considered acceptance to dental school, considering he/she scores really good on the DAT's. I'm only curious for a ballpark.

Getting into dental school ?!?
people get accepted with 3.0 gpa's in dental school.. yahoo answers really isnt the place to be looking for dental school information though. If you score a 22+ on DAT I bet you would have a chance getting accepted into at least ONE dental school if you have research or anything like that under your belt. Check out www.predents.com and www.studentdoctor.net

As stated above the average gpa for dental schools is a 3.5 but there are students yearly who are accepted with below 3.'s and rejected with 3.4 gpa's Dental school admissions requires some luck when under the 3.5 mark.
Reply:3.0 or better....good luck! It's really hard going to dental school, and it costs a lot of money.
Reply:I don't honestly know, my GPA was 3.5 in biology with a chemistry minor. I was rejected twice by multiple schools. My DAT scores in organic kept me out of dental school, and at my interviews they kept telling me to retake it to get that score up. My question was always, what the hell don't I know about organic chemistry that is going to make or break me in dental school. I refused to retake it to improve my 16 in organic, especially considering I destroyed biology, spacial relationships, reading comprehension, and math. I figured, if all the other scores, my GPA, and my devastatingly awesome personality weren't enough to overcome a poor organic score on the DAT (I got an A in organic both semester by the way) they could kiss my grits, especially considering that test is horrendous. I went to pharmacy school, now I'm the best pharmacist that formerly wanted to be a dentist that ever existed on earth. I thank the dental schools for rejecting me everyday.

Alcohol in dental school class?

If a person likes to have a few shots of vodka in some lemonade disguised in a water bottle in dental school only for their 8am class...then they have no more for the rest of the day except occasionally in teh evening... is there anyting wrong with that? No addiction, just likes to have a few shots first thing in the AM.

Alcohol in dental school class?
Hmmm I know this sounds weird but your "friend" could be an Alcoholic... an Alcoholic is not based on how much you drink or how often you drink but how much "your friend" changes.

Does this couple of shots in the morning make your friend more happy? upbeat? angry?

Its not good to be getting stuck into drugs before school anyway (yes alcohol is a drug)

I think you need to have a talk with your friend

and really find out why they drink in the morning.
Reply:This is not okay. If you love your friend, you'll encourage her to seek therapy. This is a red flag for alcoholism, drinking in the morning by habit to soften reality. No matter what your friend thinks, she is abusing alcohol and absenting herself form her own life. Please encourage her to talk to someone.

Keeping it from her husband and disguising it in the water bottle show she knows it isn't normal or okay. It is likely that these subterfuges are not fooling anyone, or won't fool anyone much longer. Help her before she makes a mess of her career, her marriage, her life.

===

Therapy can also help her find out why she isn't relaxed in the morning or in the school environment, and will help her deal with whatever is preventing her from being in the world fully conscious.

You can help her find healthy ways to relax, too. Maybe you can help her by signing up for a morning exercise class together (or run in the mornings together) or by getting her a relaxation audio to listen to. (Check out Glen Harold on audible.com for something to listen to on her iPod with relaxation/hypnosis exercises.)

Are Australia dental school grads recognized in Canada?

If I go to Australia for dental school, will I be able to practice back home in Canada? If so, what is the procedure?

Are Australia dental school grads recognized in Canada?
You should know that one admission requirement for all Canadian dental schools are the submission of Dental Aptitude Test (DAT) scores. The DAT is administered by the Canadian Dental Association (DAT) to evaluate general academic ability, comprehension of scientific information, two- and three-dimensional visual perception and manual dexterity. Learn more about the DAT.

My daughter became a hygenist. She wanted to do the same thing.

Problem... Dental offices and class hours are the same!
Reply:it all depends on what office hires you. some offices will hire under school conditions, and some won't. get you resume out there and see what happens, good luck to you, also, will the school help place you, or do you have an internship somewhere that will hire you?
Reply:YOU CAN ONLY DO LEGAL DENTAL HYGIENE IF YOU ARE A LICENSED DENTIST OR HYGIENIST.

WHILE IN SCHOOL YOU CAN PRACTICE LEARNING TO DO HYGIENE, BUT YOU WON'T BE PAID FOR THIS.

YOU CANNOT FIND A WAY TO BARTER FOR YOUR COST IN LEARNING TO BE A DENTIST.
Reply:You can work as a dental assistant, but not as a hygienist AFAIK in any state without successfully completing a dental hygiene training program and getting a license.

If you're a chairside assistant, you may learn more about the nuts and bolts of dental practice than you will as a hygienist anyhow. But the pay isn't as good as a hygienist's.

A question about dental school!!!?

If I get 4 year degree in dental hygienist. Can I apply to dental school? Or do I have to take other courses?!

A question about dental school!!!?
According to the ADA website:

Dental School Admissions

Prerequisites

Students should contact individual dental schools for specific prerequisite information. Required courses generally include:

* 8 hours Biology with lab

* 8 hours Physics

* 8 hours English

* 8 hours General Chemistry with lab

* 8 hours Organic Chemistry with lab

Majoring in science is not a must, but completion of predental science requirements is necessary.

A college undergraduate degree is recommended in preparation for dental school. Most dental students have completed four years of college. (See above the typical list of required courses assumed to be covered in the four years of college)

Both Calculus I and II for dental school?

For some reason my advisor strongly recommends both Calc I and Calc II for dental schools. However, from talking to people who are in dental school and who have been recently admitted to dental schools, it seems that a single semester of Calculus is sufficient. In fact, some say that Calculus isn't even necessary.

Please advise me your recommendation, preferrably from experience. Thank you.

P.S. I have already taken college Calculus I and plan on taking Statistics to fulfill an year's requirement of math.

Both Calculus I and II for dental school?
It depends on the school. Some want one semester of calculus, some 2. Your adviser is simply going for the worst case to give you the greatest flexibility. But one will probably be enough.

Thanks

Should I go to dental school in India?

ok, i got a problem and i'm really stressed out, so help me plzzz:

I'm going to graduate high school in May and going to attend UC Davis for my undergraduate studies but my parents are pressuring me to go to dental school in India because we'll save money and time, so i need to make a decision quickly.

What do you suggest or recommend?

Would it be better to play around $75,000 in India for dental and have it done in about 5 years or stay here and get it done in that 8ish year process?

Also, do I have to do anything when i come back to the US except the test?

Should I go to dental school in India?
go to dental school in England
Reply:i know people who are indian who went to india for medical schools, like in Punjab and Manipal.....Make sure ur school has contacts here in the US....like in medicine, strong programs for USMLE and contacts with residency, but dont know about dentistry, but the same philosphy applies, when u take the Entrance exam, everybody is equal, and the score will separate u guys.
Reply:i think u should go where YOU WANT TO GO. when i was a senior my dad also wanted me to go to India for medical school, but my parents only asked me once and when i denied it was never brought up again.

please do what ur heart says, do u wanna go to davis or another country? wherever u have always dreamed of going to.

***good luck***

PS- i suggest davis bcus u said that ur parents are "forcing u." u wouldn't have used the word "force" if u wanted personally wanted to go.

Can an architect get into dental school without doing premedical- elaborate- location- usa?

well i will be completing my bachelors degree in architecture next year and my early interest was dental which i could do due to some problem,

can i get into dental school without doing premedical and save my years or is there any way i can get into dental school with respect to my earlier studies which i mentioned as architecture.

Can an architect get into dental school without doing premedical- elaborate- location- usa?
Yes, you can get into dental school with a Bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited University. While most dental majors get their Bachelor's degree in a science related field, it is not a requirement.
Reply:no.you get no special treatment
Reply:You may. However, you will probably need to take the DAT test which I'm sure would be a piece of cake to you. Here in the East coast, it's fairly easy to get into Dental School.

Where did you go to dental school?

I'm in Canada and the dental schools here are pretty tough to get into. I have a fairly decent/GOOD gpa (it's not perfect), and i'd like to know some schools that would normally accept decent students from Canada. Schools in the Uk? what would I have to write to go to dental school in the US (its crazy expensive there).

Where did you go to dental school?
You will need to know if your high school is equivalent to the other country's high school and then apply.

Dental School- Chem or Bio major?

Yeah, for all the amazing smart people out there who've made it into dental school....did you major in BIO or CHM?

Is it true that being a chemistry major makes you stand out enough to boost your chances of getting admitted? Because that's what I was once told, but I don't know if there was a bias in that opinion.

Do you guys know which one helps more?

Thanks!

Dental School- Chem or Bio major?

Biology(as optional).

Undergraduate Major for Dental School?

For all of those dentists out there...

I am a Freshman in college and am wanting to major in Zoology. I initially thought about Biology, but there are 14 more science classes for biology that aren't even required for admission to dental school. Zoology is more interesting to me anyway, so I think I want to major in that.

Anyway, here are my questions:

What were you majors in college?

Do dental schools look for specific major when selecting people for admission?

Is it a better idea to get a BA or a BS in my major? Or does it not matter?

Thanks!

Diana

Undergraduate Major for Dental School?
Hello Diana, simply put, it does not matter at all what you major in! I majored in Business, but I took all of the pre-reqs required for dental school, i.e. Organic Chemistry (1 year), Biology (1 year), Inorganic Chemistry (1 year), and Physics (1 year). When I say one year, I mean of course 2 full semesters of each. Also, upper level biology classes are recommended, some follow: Cell Biology, Immunology, Histology (a big one!), Embryology, Gross Anatomy, Comparitive and Developmental Anatomy, Neurobiology, and of course the list goes on and on! They know you will not have time to take all of the above courses, but pick a few that are of interest to YOU. Be sure to take Psychology and Statistics, most schools require them. I can not really tell you all of the circumstances, because I do not know which school you are planning on applying to. BA or BS does not matter either! All you have to do is volunteer (community service), make good grades (3.5 GPA or better), score high on the DAT (Dental Admissions Test) and the main ONE is to shadow a dentist. It is really hard to persuade the admissions committee that you want to be a dentist when you have no idea of what it's like. Please do not make this mistake, I sit on an admissions board and these poor people look like fools when they do not know what they want. Also, last but not least, you need to do some research on your own. After all, we are not the ones that will be going through this, you will. I wish you the best of luck and hope all of your dreams are reached. It is hard work, but it is completely worth it in the long run! Hope I helped!
Reply:Hi Diana:

I must say, Dr J. gave you an accurate answer. I also studied with the goal of dental school, so I learned all about it as well as having a lot of college counseling experience in that area. Basically, other than what Dr. J said, you may not have to take all those hard classes to meet the minimum requirements of dental school asmissions, you have to understand that many dental schools like UCLA have very competitive admissions which means that you will need to show (by taking hard classes) that you are the type of student that can really handle it. The admissions counselors look for that too. If you just do the minimum and take the easiest major, you might get lucky and get in, but your chances get slimmer. On the other hand, dental schools don't want every student to be a hard core Bio major, so they will be certain to select somebody different, like someone with law school experience or physics degree. These specialists are needed also in the field of denstistry for less common areas such as research and others. I hope this helps expand your knowledge on the subject. I just didn't want to repeat what others have advised you. BS is generally better though. Good luck!

Dental school work on my teeth?

Just went to the dentist yesterday and they said I need about $5700 worth of work on my teeth. Extractions, Partials, and etc. Anyway I do not have the money and my insurance is making me pay cash first then reimburse me? I was wondering if anyone knows if a dental school would do this work for me at a good price? And could I just get my work done one thing at a time? Like pay for the first partial then do the other awhile later?

Dental school work on my teeth?
most dental schools use patients to practice their teaching so yeah i think you can do it at a dental clinic.

check to see if theres any near you and good luck
Reply:Check with universities near you to see if they have a dental clinic. Most schools that offer dentistry have some kind of clinic; Baylor University School of Dentistry in Dallas is one that I KNOW offers this service, but I'm sure there are others.

I want to have a dental school graduation party. I don't know what theme I should go for?

I want to obviously do a dental theme but I can't seem to find a place that has decorations, party favors, etc that you can buy for this. Can anyone give me some inexspensive ideas on how to throw a dental graduation party? Or where to find things for it? Would themes that have nothing to do with dental school work? Also, I want to have dancing as part of the entertainment; I want to know if this seems out of place with graduation from dental school? Help!!

I want to have a dental school graduation party. I don't know what theme I should go for?
make it a white party
Reply:Little Shop of Horrors. Get some cheap flower pots on put in fake "Audrey" plants like in the musical. venus flytraps...things like that. Recording lots of various handpieces sounds as you background music along with L.S.H. music. Since it was a black comedy, it should come together well with a disco ball and lots of references to "feed me Seymour!" You can use red crepe paper streamers coming out of the mouths of plants....something like that! I sure hope you've seen the movie or at least the dentist scene!! If not, check it out!)

For favors, send everyone with a little venus flytrap with a red ribbon with your name and date of graduation

Can I make it to Dental School and beyond?

I am wondering just how hard it is these days to get into Dental school. Not any specific dental school, but would be the minimum requirements i could land a spot with?

I am aspiring to be an orthodontist after dental school, and i'd like to know what i need to look foward to going through. Is becoming an orthodontist extremely hard and only for VERY intellegent, or is it something that a moderately intellegent person (can handle Organic chem quite easily) get through with the proper motivation?

Can I make it to Dental School and beyond?
like all medical professions, its not going to be easy. but don't give up. thousands have made it. you just have to manage your time well, think positive, and keeping moving forward. don't lose your motivation. keep it up. you can do it.

Dental school admissions?

I am planning on applying to dental school next year. My undergrad total GPA is 3.1 with a science gpa of 2.6. I recently finished two masters degrees one MS and a MPH both with a GPA of around 3.6. I have a DAT of 18. Should I apply now or retake some of my undrgrad science courses?

Dental school admissions?
Look at the minimum requirements on where you want to apply. Most places do require a higher science GPA. Another thing to factor in public schools in general are more competitive than private due to cost.

My suggestion is to retake the classes during a summer session at a lower quality school.

Regarding the DAT its been awhile but they scored it much differently when I took it. 6 sections on a scale of 1-9.

I would also definitely make sure this is what you want to do. Even though I admit the money today is even better than many other branches of medicine, the expense today is very prohibitive even for a public school.

I got to the clinical rotations and hated the pedodontic rotation to the point where I left and to this day I question the ethics of the industry.

Can a dental hygienist go back to school to become a dentist? And if so, is the schooling shorter?

I'm currently getting my gen eds done for dental hygiene school, but my parents keep pushing me to go for dental school. Is it possible to do one, then the other?

Can a dental hygienist go back to school to become a dentist? And if so, is the schooling shorter?
Do what you want, don't let your parents pressure you. Hygienists make a good living and can right there own hours. A DDS has to work lots of hours deal with people who fear you, be on call plus they have one of the largest suicide rates. Its a very tedious job working in small areas trying to repairs teeth as patients are closing on you, gagging or needing a break. Schooling is longer and what you are taking now may not even transfer. If you really want to be a DDS, shadow a DDS for a week and see if that is really the job for you.
Reply:No it will not be shorter as you need to have a 4 year degree in pre dentistry and then you have to go for a couple more years to get your dentistry degree. A couple classes may transfer but I doubt it would be very many if any at all.
Reply:Go for the gold! Dental school is 3 years long. Some dental schools don't require a BS or BA, just enough of credits for the prerequiteses.

Don't stop at being a general dentist, go 2 more years and get specialized. i.e. ortho, perio, pedo, endo, or oral surgery.

Good luck!

Course prerequisites for dental school canada?

I am selecting my course-load for my first year in a biochemistry 4 years honours program, but I want to know the course prerequisites for a DMD program at a dental school (with specific course numbers and names). I may be applying for a dental school at the University of Toronto or McGuill University in the future, so the course prerequisites have to apply to a Canadian University.

I am going to Ottawa U or Carelton U in Ottawa next year, and I want to choose the right courses.

Course prerequisites for dental school canada?
You're going to need a good number of courses in biology inluding anatomy, immunology and endocrinology, I would consider developmental biology as well, chemistry courses from introductory through organic chemistry and I'd consider some geometry or logic/philosophy courses where you could work on visualization of images. Dentists work focuses on extremely small spaces and be able to visualize in the abstract. While did not attend dental school, I took the dental college entrance exam for U.S. schools and a good portion of the exam focused on visual logic.

Dental School??? Help???

I have a 4 year degree in Biology. How long will it take me to complete dental school?? ( 2 or 4 or 6 years) For a DDS??

Dental School??? Help???
Dental School Program

Earning a doctoral degree in dentistry usually requires four academic years of study. Dental schools award the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). The four years of study leading to the DDS or DMD degree progress as follows:

Years One and Two

Classroom and laboratory instruction in basic health sciences (including anatomy, biochemistry, histology, microbiology, pharmacology and physiology), with an emphasis on dental aspects

Basic principles of oral diagnosis and treatment, may practice on manikins and models, and may begin treating patients later in the second year

Years Three and Four

Students treat patients under the supervision of licensed dental faculty. Procedures cover the broad scope of general dentistry and include opportunities to work in a variety of settings, e.g., community clinics, hospitals and outpatient clinics.

Practice management courses include instruction in effective communication skills, the use of allied dental personnel and business management

If you intend to specialize you need to plan on up to another 2 years after the 4 for the DDS (if you want to be an orthodonist, oral surgeon, etc)

Here is some admission advice-

Dental School Admissions

Prerequisites

Students should contact individual dental schools for specific prerequisite information. Required courses generally include:

8 hours Biology with lab

8 hours Physics

8 hours English

8 hours General Chemistry with lab

8 hours Organic Chemistry with lab

Majoring in science is not a must, but completion of predental science requirements is necessary.

A college undergraduate degree is recommended in preparation for dental school. Most dental students have completed four years of college.

Dental Admissions Test (DAT)

Take the DAT at least a year prior to seeking admission to dental school. This computerized test measures general academic ability, comprehension of scientific information and perceptual ability. Completion of at least one year of college level courses in biology and general and organic chemistry is recommended before taking the DAT.

Applying

Admissions committees review credentials such as academic qualifications, the results from the Dental Admissions Test (DAT), grade point average (GPA), letters of recommendation, personal interviews and dental office shadowing experiences. Admission requirements can vary from school to school.

Most dental schools require personal interviews with candidates to assess qualities such as desire to help people, self-confidence, ability to meet challenges, ability to get along with people and capacity to work independently. The personal interview also provides an opportunity to ask about the school.

Apply for admission at least a year in advance of the planned enrollment date. Most dental schools participate in the Associated American Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS). For a fee, students can subscribe to this service and complete a single application to apply to multiple dental schools. An online application to the schools participating in AADSAS can be completed at http://www.adea.org/aadsas/ . The AADSAS toll-free number is 800-353-2237

Hope that helps!

Reply:It usually takes about 4 years to complete dental school in the U.S., although I believe schools like UOP have a three year program. But remember, it takes about a year from when you apply to actually get in because of the interview process! So you have to apply now to get into the fall 2008 cycle. (but if you do apply now, it's kind of late. The later you are, the less chances of getting in. And plus, the application process takes a loong time). Good luck.
Reply:In the book I have called medical and dental schools says that it will take 4 years to get your degree in DDS.
