Do you think i have what it takes to make it to Dental School?

Im about to graduate with honors (3.70 gpa) in one of the toughest high schools in the nation (plano west sr high school) and go to UTD to do Biology. I want to pursue a carrer in Dentistry and become a general dentist. I know some people who werent that bright when they first entered college, but pulled their act together and made it to Baylor school of dentistry. Some people say that if i have the determination i can make it, but i heard its risky since dental school is so competitive. Would a degree in biology get me into denal school? Will it be as tough as everyone says???

p.s.- the dentist i have had for 10 years says that i can "shadow" him. (meaning i can follow him around and learn what he does) he also told me that i can volunteer at his office. I take this a a good sign!

A Bachelor's degree in anything will get you in as long as you have the required courses which you would likely get in your Biology major.

What you should do when you get to college:

Join a Pre-dental club. They have knowledge to get you on the right track.

You need to keep your GPA as high as possible in college and your science GPA even higher. Having a 4.0 would be exceptional but that is not all that is required.

Shadowing is very great. Shadow different types of Dentists. The more hours you have the better.

Do community service it always looks good.

Try to get a leadership position or two in a club/organization (maybe the Pre-Dental Club or something else).

Once you've completed Bio I %26amp; II, Chem I %26amp; II, and Organic Chem I %26amp; II study and prepare for your DAT (Dental Admissions Test). This would probably be at the end of your sophomore year of college. Only take it when you are confident as you are only given 3 attempts. (I recommend you take it one time no more than two)

The rest of the information you will learn as you go.

Good Luck!
