Dental/ med school?

If i went to a good college (say one of the top 50 in US), what grades (and GPA) would i need to get to make it into dental or med school?


Which is harder to make it into?


What courses should i take and NEED to do extremely well in?


What would be good to major in? minor?


I am thinking of becoming an orthodontist or an oral surgeon, would i have to go to dental or med school for these, or both? And can you tell me the years of school i would have to go through to become either one, and also which profession is harder to become? Also the pros and cons of becoming ortho/oral surg?


I am currently a sophomore in highschool, thank you.

I'd check out the areas/schools of most interest and see what they offer, what they require for entrance, etc.





Science is always an excellent major because it's flexible. Chemistry, emphasis biochemistry, would be good as an undergrad degree--will help you with your studies and if you decided against dentistry, helps with med school, pharmacy, nursing, etc. if not actual Chem jobs (which have low unemployment rates).





Minor? Business. You probably will be going into business--get a clue and have a leg up on those who would take advantage of you.

You'll need an appropriate college degree (usually 4 years full-time) to get into dental school which is probably going to take about 3-4 years. Then it's 2-3 years of an ADA-accredited orthodontics residency.





Pros and cons of any degree or profession are largely personal. Two careers are sufficiently related that I doubt there is a way to declare one more difficult than the other.





Any form of the med profession is hard work, intellectually demanding, and you have to be able to work with people. You'll need a firm grounding in math and science. It's also going to cost a bundle. You might want to consider joining the military IF you've got the academic ability to get into the dental field. You'll owe them time for putting you through, but you'll be serving other military members IN the profession you're interested in.





Med school, BTW, is similarly long.

Reply:Hmm well I'm not sure of exact numbers but I currently am a Student at the University of Florida, which has a very good medical school, and my girlfriend was just accepted into it and she had very high scores. If I were you I wouldn't worry about what the average GPA's for acceptance and just do the very best you can. Right now medical school is very competitive.
