I did poorly in my science classes at my four year college and now have switched to Political science and am doing better. Do I still have a chance of getting into dental school? Are there steps I can take to better my chances?
I changed from a science major to pol. sci., b/c I wasn't doing well. Can I still get into Dental school?
I dont agree with the previous post completely. You DO NOT have to be science major to be accepted into Medical or Dental School. However, I do believe that if you werent able to well on your science classes and you DO NOT believe you would be able to repeat the classes and do well, then i dont know how you would possible be able to get into medical school and do well. People who have non science majors usually add premed to their undergrad program or do a post baccularate program that allows them to complete all the medical school entrance requirements.
I do warn you. If and when you decide to apply to medical/dental school, your BCPM GPA (BCPM refers to your science GPA (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math).
) and cumulative GPA will be shown.
That being said, I think I would think about why you did badly in your science courses. If you dont like science or they were too hard, then you might want to reconsider your career path. Dont get me wrong, I know people mess up and may not get the best grades but alot of what you'll do in dental school will be science based.
Best of luck!

Reply:I am not sure that you could get into dental school with political science. This feild is more for the law area and people going into politics. I would ask you advisor and if you do seem to be doing better in political science than maybe you might think about changing your career path.
Reply:Sorry to say that getting into dental school with a political science degree is going to be impossible. Graduate schools want you to have the basic knowledge of a Bachelor's in that area before they'll accept you. Honestly, would you want a dentist that knew a lot about political philosophy but absolutely nothing about the biology of the mouth? I doubt it seriously.
My question is why do you want to be a dentist when it's clear that you're either not able or not interested in the basic knowledge needed to do the job? If you're truly wanting to go into dental school, then you MUST stick out the science major in order to do it. If you're liking the political science, then you should talk with your college counselor or a career counselor about jobs that are possible with a political science major. I'm afraid that in the end it will have to be one or the other.
