I have am working towards a bachelors in business, and i want to go 2 Dental school do i need to switch to BS?

I have been wanting to be a dentist for as long as I can remember. Before taking the just jumping in I worked as a D.A to see if I liked the work which I did. However somewhere I fell in to the world of design and fashion and have also been working for a BA in marketing. But now the dental bug is calling me back and I know I want to go in to dental school and eventually be an OS. I am just worried though that my all my hard work towards a BA in Marketing is going to go to waste and I have to go back and get a BS in science. Should I worry, or is the fact I have worked in the industry going to help. I also have the reasoning that they do not teach business in dental school. What do you all think?

I think that if and when you become a dentist that your experience with marketing will be of great help. You should check out the prerequisites for a dental program. I know you should take calculus, physics and chemistry etc prior to taking the DAT (dental admissions test) as it makes up most of the content. It would make sense to be in a science program. GOOD LUCK

Reply:You don't have to switch your degree, but you will still have to complete all the science pre-req's for dental school along with your degree. This usually includes a year of Inorganic Chem, a year of Organic Chem, and a year of Biology, all with labs. Usually people just find it easier to major in a science after taking all of those classes, but you can major in anything you want.

Oh, and a business degree would be helpful for your career as a dentist, so it isn't a waste.
Reply:Check with a couple of dental schools to see what they'd prefer to see.

The fact that you've done some work in the field won't hurt, but it may not make up for getting too far off the preferred track.

OTOH, my favorite dentist started as a physical education teacher, then quit that and went to dental school where he became an excellent dentist.
Reply:REGINA,

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

WHY?

DENTISTS IN DENTAL SCHOOL ARE TAUGHT NOTHING ABOUT BUSINESS OR ADVERTISING/MARKETING.

YOU DON'T NEED A BS DEGREE TO GO TO DENTAL SCHOOL, BUT A PRE-DENT CURRICULUM IS REQUIRED TO BE ACCEPED TO THE SCHOOL. SPEAK WITH A DEAN OF ADMISSIONS AND LEARN ALL ABOUT IT.

KNOWLEDGE APPLIED IS NEVER A WASTE. GOOD LUCK - FUTURE DENTIST! :-)
Reply:I'd say that all of the above answers are correct, but here's one site where you can get an idea TONIGHT what you will have to add to your curriculum to meet dental school admission requirements.

Check out my old school http://www.dental.upenn.edu/ - click on "Admissons" - and see if this is helpful at this stage of the game.
